UniTel Welcomes Senator King to Unity to Celebrate FTTH Roll Out!

On Friday, November 13th, UniTel executives welcomed U.S. Senator Angus King to its offices in Unity, Maine. In addition to discussing its long history as a locally owned and operated company committed to bringing world class broadband service to the rural communities it serves, UniTel outlined its 85 mile Fiber To The Home (FTTH) deployment currently underway. The FTTH roll out will begin next month in 7 communities after over a year of planning, engineering and construction. Also highlighted were the successful Digital Literacy initiatives currently underway in collaboration with the Unity Foundation.

Senator King lauded these recent efforts and offered support for the current FTTH project saying: "Reliable, high-capacity broadband opens doors for entrepreneurs, educators, and families in our rural state," said Senator King. "UniTel is helping to make this possible by extending fiber optics directly to its customers, bringing big-city speeds to small-town Maine."

Senator King offered his thoughts on the importance of broadband to the economic future of Maine and rural America. Senator King passed along his congratulations on UniTel's recent award by NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association as a recipient of a Smart Rural Community Trailblazer Certificate in recognition of UniTel's "innovative work" to bring high speed broadband to rural communities.

UniTel Receives Trailblazer Award

We are so proud to announce that NTCA - The Rural Broadband Association awarded UniTel a Smart Rural Community Trailblazer certificate in recognition of our "innovative work" to bring high speed broadband to the rural communities we serve. We are both honored and grateful to have our dedication to this cause acknowledged.

This recognition highlights the extensive work that we at UniTel are currently undergoing to extend high speed internet access throughout our rural service area. Our most recent endeavor involves an 85 mile Fiber To The Home (FTTH) initiative. The build-out began early this year with plans of being operational in the towns of Newburgh, Dixmont, Thorndike, Knox, and Troy by year-end. When complete, we will offer several speeds with customized options up to 1 Gigabit per second. As UniTel's CEO Laurie Osgood puts it, "Upon completion of the expansion, UniTel will operate one of the fastest fiber optic networks in Maine and the US."

UniTel's service area spans 280 square miles including all or portions of 16 rural communities in parts of three counties. Despite the rural nature of these areas, internet access remains pivotal to residential life, business growth, and non-profit operations.

Here at UniTel, we have made it our mission to provide affordable, dependable broadband service to enhance economic development. It continues to be our pleasure to offer these services to the residents and businesses in our communities. We extend our sincere thanks to you, our valued customer, for being part of our journey to this esteemed award.
