UniTel offers high-speed internet – up to a gigabit over our fiber network – yet occasionally we hear that customers aren’t experiencing the speeds they expected. Often, the issue stems from the home network set-up. PC Magazine warns, “Don’t rely on obsolete hardware… if you are running old hardware you can’t expect the best performance.”
The network in your house is only as fast as the slowest component. That means that your Wi-Fi speed is potentially limited by any or all of the equipment in your home. UniTel recommends that you make sure all of the devices on your network are provisioned for the fastest connection: your modem, router, ethernet ports and your devices (iPad, computer).
Start by checking the router. When you subscribe to a particular speed, but the signal is being routed via an older router, you may not achieve the maximum speeds. It’s like trying to watch HD TV on a standard definition TV – it just won’t be high definition. While UniTel does not currently lease a router, we’re happy to recommend the following routers* which range in price from $170 – $250 and can be found places like Amazon, Best Buy, or other online retailers:
- ASUS RT-AX3000 or above
- Linksys EA8300
- D-Link Wi-Fi Router, AC2600
- NETGEAR Nighthawk AX4200 Wireless Speed
Larger houses may need more help. Sometimes, larger houses require a mesh router, which is a system with two or more units broadcasting your Wi-Fi network signal(s). One of those units links to the modem and acts as the router, while other units (“satellites”) capture and rebroadcast the same network signal(s).
Keep checking. We know that you likely can’t go out and buy new everything, but if you have an older model computer, that could be the culprit for your network slowness. If your router is more than four years old, you will want to upgrade it. If your router is buried in a bedroom closet or in the basement, it would be better to move it to a more central location in your home. Don’t forget to look at your Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as Alexa or Ring doorbells to make sure they are running the latest software updates.
